e14d6b3cdc reflect/protoreflect: add FieldDescriptor.TextName
Add a new TextName accessor that returns the field name that should
be used for the text format. It is usually just the field name, except:
1) it uses the inlined message name for groups,
2) uses the full name surrounded by brackets for extensions, and
3) strips the "message_set_extension" for well-formed extensions
to the proto1 MessageSet.

We make similar adjustments to the JSONName accessor so that it applies
similar semantics for extensions.

The two changes simplifies all logic that wants the humanly readable
name for a field.

e0b77db13b internal/genid: add new package for generated identifiers
The genid package unifies the genname, fieldnum, and detectknown
packages into a single package.

Whenever possible use the generated constants rather than
hard-coded literals. This makes it easier to search the entire
module for special logic that deal with well-known types.

81db48ad09 all: move well-known types
This is step 2 of 6 in a multi-stage migration
to move the well-known types
from the google.golang.org/genproto module
to the google.golang.org/protobuf module.

The generated Go packages for field_mask.proto, api.proto,
type.proto, and source_context.proto are being moved over
to this module alongside all the other well-known types.

In order to move these types between two modules,
there needs to be a sequence of changes submitted in
decently rapid succession. It is impossible to atomically
make these changes, so a brief breakage is inevitable.
The steps are as follows:

Step 1: Submit a change to cloud.google.com/go/internal/gapicgen
to avoid generating the well-known types. Otherwise, the tool
will undo the changes made in step 3.
See https://code-review.googlesource.com/c/gocloud/+/56810

Step 2: Submit a change to google.golang.org/protobuf that
adds the generated well-known types being migrated to that module.
In order to prevent the situation where a user links in
too old a version of the genproto module such that
duplicate registration occurs for the well-known types,
the registry is specially modified to provide an error
message that instructs users to upgrade the genproto module.
See https://golang.org/cl/234937

Step 3: Submit a change to google.golang.org/genproto that
switches all generated well-known types to be aliases to the
ones declared in google.golang.org/protobuf from the previous step.
This will cause the genproto module to incur an dependency
on an unreleased version of the protobuf module.
See https://github.com/googleapis/go-genproto/pull/372

Step 4: Submit a change to google.golang.org/protobuf that
adds a weak module depdency on the genproto module at the
revision from the previous step.

Step 5: Release google.golang.org/protobuf@v1.24.0.

Step 6: Submit a change to google.golang.org/genproto that
updates the protobuf module dependency to v1.24.0.

118baf6390 all: funnel similar functionality through a single function
Some companies (e.g., Google) run a profiling service where they may
choose to special-case certain symbols in a binary to classify
commonly used libraries like protobufs.

This CL funnels similar functionality through a single function
so that they can be more easily identified. This is by no means a
firm statement that these identifiers will never change names,
but at least the code documents warnings to avoid changing the
name of certain identifiers.

This CL provides the following semi-stable symbol names:
	"google.golang.org/protobuf/proto".MarshalOptions.size
	"google.golang.org/protobuf/proto".MarshalOptions.marshal
	"google.golang.org/protobuf/proto".UnmarshalOptions.unmarshal
	"google.golang.org/protobuf/encoding/prototext".MarshalOptions.marshal
	"google.golang.org/protobuf/encoding/prototext".UnmarshalOptions.unmarshal
	"google.golang.org/protobuf/encoding/protojson".MarshalOptions.marshal
	"google.golang.org/protobuf/encoding/protojson".UnmarshalOptions.unmarshal

Merge and Clone are not part of the above set since there is a
possibility that MergeOptions will be added in the future.

We use an unexported method so that we have the freedom to change the
method however we want since profilers do not care about that.

Add a new Fuzz message containing all the message types we want to make
available to fuzzers. Previously, testing (for example) required fields
would require modifying the fuzzer; now, it's just a matter of adding a

Add internal/cmd/generate-corpus to codify where the fuzz seed corpus
comes from. This will simplify adding text and json fuzzers.

Rename internal/fuzz/wire to internal/fuzz/wirefuzz to minimize package
name ambiguity. Also, the addition of the Fuzz container message
invalidates the existing corpus, so using a new name seems like a good
idea.

9d637ca923 internal/impl: optimize reflect methods
This change performs two optimizations:
* It uses a pre-constructed rangeInfos slice to iterate over
all the fields. This is more performant since iterating over a slice
is faster than iterating over a map. Furthermore, this slice
does not contain fields that are part of a oneof. If a oneof has
N fields, the time to check presence on the oneof is now O(1)
instead of O(N).
* It uses a dense field info slice that is optmized for the common
case where the field number is relatively low and close in value
to the index itself.

We also fix a minor bug in the construction of oneofInfo where
it wasn't treating a typed nil pointer to a wrapper struct as if
it were unset. This ensures WhichOneof and Has always agree.

68b81c3117 internal/impl: store extension values as Values
Change the storage type of ExtensionField from interface{} to
protoreflect.Value.

Replace the codec functions operating on interface{}s with ones
operating on Values.

Values are potentially more efficient, since they can represent
non-pointer types without allocation. This also reduces the number of
types used to represent field values.

Additionally, this change lays groundwork for changing the
user-visible representation of repeated extension fields from
*[]T to []T. The storage type for extension fields must support mutation
(thus *[]T currently); changing the storage type to a Value permits this
without the need to introduce yet another view on field values.

bab3d4084e runtime/protoimpl, cmd/protoc-gen-go: support release versioning
In order for protoc-gen-go to output the current version,
it needs to know what version it is currently running as.
However, we cannot rely on the git tags since the tags are not
made until *after* the commit has been submitted.
Instead, we manually encode the version into the code and
make sure that git tags match up with the version in the code.

The version.go file in runtime/protoimpl contains instructions
for how to make a release. Essentially:
* Every non-release commit has a version string with "devel" in it.
* Every release commit must not have "devel" in it and must be unique.
* The "release process" involves submitting two CLs.
The first CL creates a version string without "devel",
which is the commit that a git tag will actually reference.
The second CL follows immediately and re-introduces "devel"
into the version string.

The following example shows a possible sequence of VersionStrings
for git commits in time-ascending order:
	v1.19.0-devel (this CL)
	v1.19.0-devel
	v1.19.0-devel
	v1.19.0-devel
	v1.20.0-rc.1 <- tagged
	v1.20.0-rc.1.devel
	v1.20.0-rc.1.devel
	v1.20.0-rc.1.devel
	v1.20.0-rc.2 <- tagged
	v1.20.0-rc.2.devel
v1.20.0 <- tagged (future public release)
	v1.20.0-devel
	v1.20.0-devel
	v1.20.0-devel
	v1.20.0-devel
	v1.20.1 <- tagged
	v1.20.1-devel
	v1.20.1-devel
	v1.21.0 <- tagged
	v1.21.0-devel

Note that we start today with v1.19.0-devel, which means that our initial
release will be v1.20.0. This number was intentionally chosen since
1) the number 20 has some correlation to the fact that we keep calling
the new implementation the "v2" implementation, and
2) the set of tagged versions for github.com/golang/protobuf
and google.golang.org/protobuf are unlikely to ever overlap.
This way, the version of protoc-gen-go is never ambiguous which module
it was built from.

Now that we have version information, we add support for generating .pb.go
files with the version information recorded. However, we do not emit
these for .pb.go files in our own repository since they are always guaranteed
to be at the right version (enforced by integration_test.go).

2aea614c5e internal/impl: fix race over messageState.mi
The messageState.mi field is atomically checked and set
in generated code to the *MessageInfo associated with that message.
However, the messageState type accesses the mi field without
any atomic loads, thus being a potential race.
We fix this by always calling a messageInfo method that performs
a atomic.LoadPointer on the *MessageInfo.

There is no performance effect from this change on x86 since
an atomic.LoadPointer is identical to a MOV instruction.
From an assembly perspective, there was no memory race previously.
However, the lack of an atomic.LoadPointer meant that the compiler
could in theory reorder the "normal" load to produce truly racy code.

c51e2e0293 all: support enforce_utf8 override
In 2014, when proto3 was being developed, there were a number of early
adopters of the new syntax. Before the finalization of proto3 when
it was released in open-source in July 2016, a decision was made to
strictly validate strings in proto3. However, some of the early adopters
were already using invalid UTF-8 with string fields.
The google.protobuf.FieldOptions.enforce_utf8 option only exists to support
those grandfathered users where they can opt-out of the validation logic.
Practical use of that option in open source is impossible even if a user
specifies the proto1_legacy build tag since it requires a hacked
variant of descriptor.proto that is not externally available.

This CL supports enforce_utf8 by modifiyng internal/filedesc to
expose the flag if it detects it in the raw descriptor.
We add an strs.EnforceUTF8 function as a centralized place to determine
whether to perform validation. Validation opt-out is supported
only in builds with legacy support.

We implement support for validating UTF-8 in all proto3 string fields,
even if they are backed by a Go []byte.
